Swiss-Austrian conductor Sándor Károlyi’s recent symphonic work includes his debuts and further engagements with Turku Philharmonic Orchestra, Graz Philharmonic Orchestra, Inso-Lviv Orchestra, Kammerphilharmonie Landshut and Orchestre de Dijon Bourgogne performing works by Penderecki, Bartók, Saint-Saëns and Schumann.
Sándor held the position of 2nd Kapellmeister from 2023-2025 at the Staatstheater Nürnberg where he conducted Bizet’s Carmen, Abraham’s Märchen im Grand-Hotel, Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte and Don Giovanni, Johann Strauß’ Die Fledermaus and Puccini’s Madama Butterfly. Other recent operatic engagements include productions of Don Pasquale and Il Barbiere di Siviglia at the Ticino Musica Festival (2019/2021) in Lugano and La Cenerentola for The New Generation Festival in Florence (2020).
Laureate of the 2018 International Nino Rota Conducting Competition and semi-finalist in the 2017 Fitelberg Competition, Sándor has worked as an Assistant for Enrique Mazzola, Ingo Metzmacher Gábor Takács-Nagy and violinist/conductor Julian Rachlin.
Trained as a pianist, trombonist and keen singer, he dedicated himself to conducting, undertaking Bachelor and Masters’ degrees in conducting at MUK and MDW in Vienna. Sándor was born in Munich and grew up between Geneva and Vienna. He was awarded a bursary from the Eötvös Foundation in Budapest and has attended masterclasses with renowned conductors such as Paavo Järvi and Daniele Gatti.
