Biography.

Swiss-Austrian conductor Sándor Károlyi holds the position as 2nd Kapellmeister at the Staatstheater Nürnberg. In the 24/25 season, he will conduct performances for Verdi’s Macbeth, Bizet’s Carmen, Abraham’s Märchen im Grand-Hotel, Weill’s Die Dreigroschenoper, Humperdinck’s Hänsel and Gretel and Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte. Highlights of the past season have included Johann Strauß’ Die Fledermaus, Mozart’s Don Giovanni and Puccini’s Madama Butterfly.

International operatic engagements include productions of Don Pasquale and Il Barbiere di Siviglia at the Ticino Musica Festival in Lugano and La Cenerentola for The New Generation Festival in Florence. His recent symphonic work includes concerts with Turku Philharmonic Orchestra, Graz Philharmonic Orchestra, Kammerphilharmonie Landshut and Orchestre de Dijon Bourgogne with works by Penderecki, Bartók, Saint-Saëns and Schumann. 

Laureate of the 2018 International Nino Rota Conducting Competition and semi-finalist in the 2017 Fitelberg Competition, he has worked as an Assistant for Enrique Mazzola, Ingo Metzmacher, Julian Rachlin and Gábor Takács-Nagy. He was awarded a bursary from the Eötvös Foundation in Budapest.

Sándor Károlyi was born in Munich, grew up in Geneva and studied in Florence and Vienna. Initially a pianist and trombonist, he also studied singing before dedicating himself to conducting. He obtained honours in both his Bachelor and Masters’ degrees in conducting at MUK and MDW in Vienna. Sándor works regularly with mentor and professor Sophie Rachlin and has attended masterclasses with renowned conductors Paavo Järvi and Daniele Gatti.
